Business workshop to focus on harassment, discrimination

If you are a small business person looking to learn more about harassment and discrimination in the workplace, a free workshop is scheduled to help.

The UC Merced Small Business Development Center (SBDC) in conjunction with KDG Human Resource Solutions of Bakersfield is sponsoring a FREE workshop Thursday, August 12, 2010, called "Harassment and Discrimination: Preventing and Handling DFEH Complaints."

 The Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH) is the governmental agency in California that accepts, investigates, and resolves complaints alleging harassment and discrimination in employment.

Business after five mixer planned

You are invited to unwind, socialize and network. Bank of the Sierra is hosting the Chamber's Business After Five Mixer on Thursday, July 22nd.

It will be held from 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm at 4060 Coffee Road in Bakersfield.

Bring a friend and lots of business cards, and make new business connections.

Regular admission is $5 for Chamber members and $10 for nonmembers.

Tailgaters closes as owner answers to fed drug charges

A week of upheaval at Tailgaters Sports Grill has ended with its permanent closure, according to signs posted on its doors.

The bar, which is across the street from Rabobank Arena, was one of three locations raided Tuesday by Bakersfield police and the Drug Enforcement Administration.

The restaurant's owner, Christina Montalvo, pleaded not guilty to federal drug charges Friday in Fresno.

Facebook workshop offered by Arts Council

Make the most of a Facebook page by picking up some pointers at a couple upcoming workshops.

Two Facebook classes will be offered on Friday, July 23.  The sessions are offered through the Tech Arts Academy at the Tejon Computer Lab in the UC Merced building at 2000 K Street.

The morning class for beginners will run from 8 a.m. till noon.  It's called "Intro to Social Media and Harnessing the Power of Facebook."

The afternoon session will go beyond the basics.  "Making Facebook Work for You" will run from 1:30 p.m.

Free workshops offered to help small businesses

The UC Merced Small Business Development Center is teaming up with KDG Human Resource Solutions of Bakersfield to sponsor a series of free workshops on labor laws.  

The workshops are designed to give owners the information needed to not only protect the business but also to provide a positive working environment.

Grower to bring fresh fruits to kids

Murray Family Farms is rolling out its fruit trucks to expose Kern County kids to fresh fruits.

The family-owned business is teaming up with the Boys and Girls Club of America by sending trucks full of fruit to local schools. They also have seed-spitting and pie-eating contests.

Congressman Jim Costa and Mayor Harvey Hall were on hand for the ceremony at 510 19th St., next to Central Park.

Andre's founder dies, legacy lives on

In a time of modern, cheap, standard-issue fast food, there's one restaurant that stands above all others and that has stood the test of time: Andre's Drive-In restaurant.

The first Andre's Drive-In opened on Niles Street in 1955 (it has since closed). The Brundage Lane location came two years later.

"Hasn't really changed," longtime customer Ron Steele said about the restaurant.

17-year employee Alice Ladino agrees.

"Like the oldies, here to stay," she said.

After 60 years, Silver Fox sign comes down

After being a downtown landmark for almost 60 years, the bright lights of the Silver Fox will no longer shine on 18th Street.

According to the owner of the Silver Fox building, the bar's lease is up and instead of selling the sign she decided to donate the piece of Americana to the Kern County Museum.

The museum has a display for neon signs.

"A sign in this kind of condition, to get it as a donation, is really rare," said museum spokesperson Lori Wear.
